Elizabeth and Gulistan Mirzaei are Academy Award-nominated directors. Their first feature documentary, LAILA AT THE BRIDGE, screened at numerous festivals including Locarno and had a theatrical run in the U.K.
Their short film, THREE SONGS FOR BENAZIR, won a Cinema Eye Honors Award, a Grierson Award, and was nominated for a 2022 Academy Award.
Their newest fim NATALIA premiered at True/False and Visions du Reél and was nominated for an Australian Screen Award for Best Editing. The film was one of Vox’s ten new documentaries to watch for, and praised by critics as “outstanding.”
They founded Mirzaei Films to be an indigenous window into modern-day Afghanistan, making films that are recognized for their intimacy, rare access, and how they challenge perceptions. They are based between California and Afghanistan and have three daughters together.
